Mass Story Lab Moves to #CLOSEmsdf, the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility!

EXPO is leading the campaign to #CLOSEmsdf.  At the Mass Story Lab event – facilitated by Mass Story Lab, a community storytelling project whose mission is to make stories of people directly impacted by mass incarceration “an instrument of justice” — a capacity crowd heard compelling personal stories from EXPO leaders and then engaged in a small group process to develop strategy for the 5 committees that are steering the campaign to #CLOSEmsdf.  Articles are here, and here.

In 2001, the state of Wisconsin built the Milwaukee Secure Detention Facility to temporarily house people who have allegedly violated rules of probation, parole, and extended supervision. This facility, now over-crowded with 3 times the intended capacity is used to unnecessarily incarcerate thousands of people who have not been convicted of new crimes.

Problems facing people incarcerated at MSDF include extreme heat, poor ventilation, no outdoor recreation, being locked down for 22 hours a day, no in-person visits, and other abuses. All of this is for people who have not been convicted of new crimes and in most cases have not even been charged with new crimes.

It is time for Governor Walker to #CLOSEmsdf!
